ABOUT US
Formed in 1973, Amalgamated Marketing Ltd is part of the Amalgamated Dairies Group which has been trading in New Zealand’s primary products for more than 80 years. The early years were dairy products, followed by meat, and for the last 20 years have been almost exclusively seafood.
This stemmed from the declaration of the NZEEZ back in 1977 where Amalgamated had the opportunity to charter large trawlers from the former USSR and establish themselves as a significant player within the NZ fishing industry.
Amalgamated have also had a long association with major NZ fishing company Sanford Ltd, buying in to the company in the early 1970’s and are currently still their largest shareholder.
In 1983, Amalgamated along with the Talley Group formed Amaltal Fishing Co which grew to become NZ’s third largest fishing company but sold their share to their partner in Feb 2005.
Amalgamated’s marketing team continues to source seafood from a large number of other fishing companies operating within the NZEEZ ensuring that a diverse range of fish and seafood products are available to the market from the clear, unpolluted, waters of New Zealand.
Notable successes have been:
1920/50’s Selling 60% of New Zealand dairy products to Britain.
1934 First shipment of dairy product to Japan.
1953 First sale of New Zealand lamb to West Indies.
1955 First sale of New Zealand lamb to Canada.
1958 First sale of New Zealand beef to USA.
1965 First import of potash to New Zealand from the Soviet Union (USSR).
1969 First sale of New Zealand meat (beef and mutton) to the Soviet Union (USSR).
1970’s Sold large quantities of mutton to Russia, sometimes in excess of 100,000 tonnes per year.
1975 Opened office in Bahrain to open up the sale of NZ primary produce to the Middle East.
1978 Commenced imports of ‘Lada’ cars from Russia.
1979 Entered the New Zealand Fishing Industry with chartered trawlers from the Soviet Union.
1980/90’s Continues to charter Russian trawlers in order to market fish to its customers around the world.
1983 Formed Amaltal Fishing Company, a 50/50 partnership between Amalgamated Marketing Ltd and Talleys Fisheries Ltd of Motueka.
